File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

FTP is defined as being an Internet protocol allowing the exchange of files. FTP was developed to transfer files between computers on a TCP/IP network. A program (client) enables the user to contact another computer on the Internet and exchange files.

FTP Clients

FTP clients are applications that make the File Transfer Protocol, or FTP, easy to use. FTP is designed for the transmission of files across the Internet or networks using TCP/IP. When you install TCP/IP on your computer, FTP is also installed. When you access an FTP site using an FTP client, it appears similar to viewing files and directories on your hard disk. You can tunnel down into directories and sub directories, etc. You can choose files that you want to upload, or download from the web server.
